Remember the people from whom you come

As likely to arrive from New Brunswick as Maine, Vanceboro families settled, worked, and lived in a close knit border community, many for generations.

Over the years, the railroad, customs and immigration, lumbering, river drives, and local businesses from F. Shaw Brothers Tannery to Holly’s General store provided employment. Churches, schools, and civic organizations like The Knights of Pythias and The Legion offered a sense of community and support. Outdoor skating on the duck pond, camps up lake, fishing by the dam, a roller skating rink, Armstrong’s Picture House, a lively town band and a talented baseball team offered fun and entertainment. Collecting family histories and sharing photographs of Vanceboro’s past not only enriches our understanding of those who came before us, but adds color and depth to our present lives.

We encourage you to add what you know about your family’s experiences living in Vanceboro to this section of the website. Send stories, family histories, and photographs to lyn.brown@colby.edu
